It takes as much time to factor up the points and punch them into the chart as it does to exercise. No offense, but you can have all that! I'll stick to the plain old "eat healthy and work-out" regimen and it's worked for me so far.

You know, I shouldn't diss modern diet centers. My wife has lost weight while sticking with Weight Watchers. I think she's lost about 8 or 9 pounds so far. 10 more and she'll be in that size 3 she wants so badly. Maybe you should sort through the popular diet centers and find the one that best suits your likes and needs. It's much healthier than procrastinating for another year. Keep foods that are not great for weight loss like cookies, cakes and brownies out of the house. Remember to have your salad dressing on the side. Definitely avoid eating about 3 hours before bed as we are don't burn much calories during the night when we're sleeping. Decrease Carbohydrates. Carbs hold water and can prevent our body form burning fat for energy. Foods rich in carbohydrates include, bread, cookies, and cakes. This can increase insulin levels and blood sugar which can stop fat burning and increase fat storage. Even fruits can contain carbs as they contain fructose which is the one the quickest nutrient to be stored as fat.

Groundbreaking Fat Burning Cardio Research Study - An Expert's Opinion

I've received a few emails about a "new groundbreaking fat loss study" and how it is supposed to burn fat faster than regular cardio (even though we know regular cardio sucks).

Researchers compared...

a) Doing a 60 minute bike (at 60% max effort) then recovering for 60 minutes

vs

b) doing a 30 minute bike, resting 20 minutes, and then doing another 30 minute bike and then resting for 60 minutes. (both rides at 60% max effort).

The results showed...

i) The total calories burned between the workouts did not differ.

ii) more fat was burned during the recovery for the split workout (77% vs 56%).

What does this mean?

Jack squat.

Nothing.

First, why would i even consider doing either of the above when a 20-minute interval workout gets more results?

Second, who is going to do this?

Third, look at the actual numbers of fat calories burned...at most, it could be 50 extra calories. Again, useless in all practical terms.

But...

Look for health clubs to be full of people sitting around for 20 minutes between cardio bouts...maybe clubs will start offering "recovery rooms" where people can sit for 20 minutes and read dry People magazines, instead of the sweat covered People magazines they are used to reading while doing their relatively worthless cardio workouts in the past.

Why am I so hard on cardio?

Because its a waste of time...

and now these researchers and the authors of these "news reports" want to waste even MORE of your life...

As I wrote recently...

A recent study published by the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, subjects aged 40 to 75 were instructed to do 60 minutes of aerobic exercise per day for 6 days per week for an entire year.

(Reference... Obesity 15:1496-1512 (2007). Exercise Effect on Weight and Body Fat in Men and Women. Anne McTiernan*, et al.)

Given the amount of exercise, you'd expect weight losses of 20, 30 pounds, or more, right?

Well, the surprise findings showed the average fat loss for female subjects was was only 4 pounds for the entire year, while men lost 6.6 pounds of fat over the year. That's over 300 hours of aerobic exercise just to lose a measly 6 pounds of blubber. Not time well spent, in my opinion.

*** Listen, you give 300 hours a year, and you'll lose a lot more than 6.6 pounds of fat...trust me on that. Heck, give me 300 hours a year and I could probably turn you into a Ninja, commercial airline pilot, and accomplished mime, and still help you burn more fat than you would with 300 hours of cardio.

Here's the best advice I can give you...

Ignore mass media news reports about fitness.

Guidelines for Resistance Training

Many people are afraid to start training with weights. Some think they'll injure themselves and others don't know where to start. Luckily, the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) has some guidelines that will help make your workout easier to do and more effective.

First, you need to choose a mode of exercise. A lot of options exist for resistance training. You can use free weights, machines or even your own body weight. Machines offer the safest workout and should be used by beginners. Free weights typically recruit more muscles than machines giving you a better workout. Unfortunately there is a higher risk of injury associated with free weights. Once you feel comfortable with machines, you can move into free weights but know that machines will still give you a good workout if you want to stick with them.

After you've chosen the mode of exercise you need to pick the exercises. The ACSM recommends you do a minimum of 8-10 exercises that target all the major muscle groups (hips, thighs, legs, back, chest, shoulders, arms, abdomen). You should do 1 set per muscle group that consist of 8-12 repetitions (reps). The only way 1 set per muscle group can be effective is if by your last rep you can't do anymore. You'll have to figure out a weight for every exercise in which you can reach that point. Keeping a log will save time so you don't have to find the right weight each week.

Do each rep in a controlled way. Don't jerk the weights and go at a constant speed throughout the range of motion. Each rep should last 3 seconds on the concentric contraction and 3 seconds on the eccentric contraction (3 seconds down and 3 seconds up) with a normal breathing pattern. You should take enough rest between exercises to do the next one with good form. Every 2-3 workout sessions, you need to pick some new exercises.

These guidelines should help you start a good workout routine. Be patient as you won't see results overnight. Sticking with a strength training program will give you many benefits in the long run.

How to Lose Weight

It's not easy to figure out the "magic" formula on how to lose weight. It is a challenge for many of us, since we all have an individual path to the quickest weight loss. Step 4:

Start an exercise program. If you can't do a sit-up, start out with stretches and touch your toes. Pick exercises you can live with, and build up to as many exercises in one session as you can. If you detest exercising, dancing is a form of exercise too.

Step 5:

Carry healthy snacks with you at all times to avoid the pitfall of buying fast food or eating out of vending machine when you are starving!

Fast weight loss is harder to maintain. Remember that when you lose weight gradually, you are more apt to keep the weight off for good. The conventional wisdom for optimum weight loss is one-half to 1-1/2 pounds per week.

Diet: Are French Fries Really A Vegetable?

The government, nutritionists, doctors, and dietitians implore us to eat 5 servings of vegetables a day. Considering that a serving is only half a cup, a decent-sized side of vegetables and a big salad does it for the day.

But are we eating that consistently?

For the average American child, 25% of their intake of vegetables consists of french fries or potato chips. Adults eat an average of 4 servings of french fries per week. A small (are there any small servings still out there?) serving of french fries carries 187 calories - a bag a day is over 68,000 calories a year, almost 20 pounds of extra weight!

Is it any wonder that 15% of our children are obese and that the percentage is growing all the time?

For all the diet and health information that daily blares from our radios, televisions, and Internet portals, we are drowning in our own fat. We spend half our family food budget on eating out, primarily at fast food outlets, where the true nutritional and caloric values of the offerings require the skill of a Sherlock Holmes to uncover.

Think what it could do for our collective waistlines if we simply deleted french fries from our diet and substituted real, live vegetables (a rare commodity in the fast food industry). We may yet be saved by the lowly green bean.

We can try to get the word out but the U. S. Department of Agriculture has only two million a year to spend on the cause and the food advertisers spend forty billion a year to convince us otherwise.

Oh well, maybe we didn't want to be slim anyway.

Lose Weight Quickly By Eating Foods In Combination For An Easy Diet
